Categories: Panic Disorder

Experience Narrative:

Practitioner and client taking a walk into a shop, the client lags behind and watches the practitioner from nearby. The practitioner standing near some shelving in an aisle starts to hyperventilate, walks around a little agitated, tries hard to look panicked.

Belief to be tested:

If I have a panic attack then others will stop and stare and say something bad to me or about me to their friend. Rejected, stupid, inadequate

Alternative Perspective:

If I have a panic attack, people might notice, but they will walk on by and not really show any interest. They will not say anything bad to me or about me to their friend.

Safety Behaviours to drop:

cutting the experiment short, finding empty aisles

Client reflections:

Client noticed that no one actually bothered to stop and pass any comment. No one said anything bad. This showed that no one really cared or judged negatively.

Practitioner reflections:

Felt a bit awkward demonstrating this but I soon got into character, even hanging off shelves exaggerating my struggles.
